Statement by Mr. Li Gen of the Chinese Delegation at the Second Committee of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly under Agenda Item 20: Globalization and Interdependence

2019-10-17 21:59

Madam Chair,

China associates itself with the statement made by the State of Palestine on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

The world today is witnessing growing multi-polarity, economic globalization, ICT development, and cultural diversity, which have made countries more connected and interdependent than ever before. Mankind live in one global village in which we are bound increasingly by the same destiny.

As globalization continues, problems such as unfair distribution and widening gap between the rich and the poor have become more prominent. The unfair international division of labor has trapped developing countries in the middle and lower end of the global value chain for a long time. Poverty, hunger, inequality, climate change have seriously hindered sustainable development. Unilateralism and protectionism pursued by a certain country has also cast a shadow on globalization.

Madam Chair,

Faced with multiple challenges and difficulties, we must hold tightly the key of development. Because only by development can we eliminate the root causes of conflict. Only by development can the basic rights of the people be guaranteed. Only by development can their aspiration for a better life be fulfilled. The current anti-globalization sentiment is nothing but a ripple and therefore cannot stop the tide of globalization.

China has always been one of the advocates and defenders of globalization. It is willing to share development opportunities and outcomes with other countries. The Belt and Road initiative put forward by China has become global consensus. This Initiative, an brushwork at first, has become a grand and magnificent painting, thanks to the joint efforts of all participating countries. By the end of 2018, Chinese enterprises had invested more than 90 billion US dollars in the countries along the route and signed new foreign contracts worth more than 600 billion US dollars. China Railway Express, with accumulative 13,000 trips, has connected 108 cities in 16 Euro-Asia countries.

In 2018, China successfully held the first China International Import Expo and Hongqiao International Economic and Trade Forum, attracting 3617 overseas enterprises and achieving a transaction volume of 57.8 billion US dollars in 6 days. This is another major step of China to open its market to the world. Through sharing China’s development opportunities, enterprises of different countries have grown stronger, delivering benefits to the peoples.

Madam Chair,

China will continue to firmly uphold multilateralism and an international system with the UN at its core. We hope that the UN will do more in the field of development. China stands ready to work with all member states for win-win cooperation and promote a more open, inclusive, balanced globalization to the benefit of all, and jointly build a community of shared future for mankind.

Thank you, Madam Chair.
