Security Council Discussed Work of UNSMIL Through VTC

The Security Council held a video-conference on the work of United Nations Support Mission in Libya(UNSMIL) on March 26, 2020, which was chaired by the Presidency of the Council, H.E. Mr. Zhang Jun.

The members of the Security Council were briefed by the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the situation in Libya.

The members of the Security Council expressed their concern at the significant escalation of hostilities on the ground in Libya. They also expressed concern at the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya and called on the parties to de-escalate the fighting urgently, to immediately cease hostilities and to ensure unhindered access of humanitarian aid throughout the country.

The members of the Security Council called for all Member States to comply with the arms embargo in Libya.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the importance of the United Nations central role in facilitating a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned inclusive political process.

The members of the Security Council paid tribute to Ghassan Salamé, former United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Libya, and commended his efforts to bring about political resolution to the conflict in Libya.
