Statement by Mr. Zhang Yaojun of the Chinese Delegation at the Third Committee of the 71st GA at the Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council for the Human Rights Situation of Iran

2016-10-27 12:13

Madam Chair,

China takes note of the report of the Special Rapporteur.

China always advocates constructive dialogue and cooperation among countries on the basis of equality and mutual respect in a joint effort to seek effective means to promote and protect human rights and properly address differences in the human rights field. China opposes forcibly establishing country-specific human rights mandate without the consent of the country concerned, a practice which is neither conducive to dialogue and cooperation, nor beneficial to the promotion of human rights in the country.

China welcomes the recent efforts made by the government of Iran in tackling the issue of violence against women, promoting women's participation in politics, actively implementing UPR recommendations and addressing the issue of unequal access to education and economic participation by minority groups. China appreciates the invitation extended by the Iranian government to the special rapporteurs on the right to food and on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights for them to visit Iran. We hope that the international community takes a comprehensive, objective and balanced perspective in its assessment of Iran's human rights progress and challenges, respects Iran's religious and cultural traditions, and listens more attentively to the legitimate claims of the Iranian government and people, and plays a constructive role in advancing the human rights cause of Iran.

Thank you, Madam Chair.
