Statement by Ms. QU Jiehao at the Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Myanmar at the Third Committee of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly

2017-10-25 09:57

Mr. Chairman,

China maintains a consistent position on country-specific human rights issues. We believe that all countries should resolve their differences in the field of human rights through constructive dialogue and cooperation and we oppose the politicization of human rights issues.

China supports Myanmar in choosing its development path based on its national conditions and sincerely wishes for the realization of political stability, national harmony and economic development in Myanmar. The issue of Rakhine State involves complex historical, national and religious elements, therefore cannot be resolved overnight. China notes the series of measures taken by the government of Myanmar to de-escalate tension and maintain stability in Rakhine State, which will help find a durable solution in this regard. The international community should be objective in assessing the difficulties and challenges facing the government of Myanmar, remain patient and provide support and assistance.

China understands the difficulties and concerns of Bangladesh and commends its efforts to improve the humanitarian situation of the refugees. As a friendly neighbor to both Myanmar and Bangladesh, China has been actively encouraging the two parties to resolve the issue through dialogue and consultations. China has provided necessary assistance to both countries to help them properly resettle displaced persons and will continue to do so. Currently, the situation on the ground is moving towards stability. All parties should be constructive and help consolidate this momentum and gradually ease the tension and improve the humanitarian situation on the ground. China stands ready to work with all parties to play a constructive role in restoring order and achieving peace and stability in Rakhine region.

I thank you Mr. Chairman.
