Statement by Counsellor YAO Shaojun at the Dialogue with the Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Burundi

2017-10-26 09:51

Mr. Chairman,

China always advocates constructive dialogue and cooperation as a way to address differences in the field of human rights and opposes the arbitrary establishment of a Special Procedure without the consent of the country concerned.

Stability in Burundi is conducive to maintaining the hard won peace in the Great Lakes region. The government of Burundi has made positive efforts to maintain stability and promote reconciliation within the country. Its efforts deserve an objective evaluation by the international community. China supports the choice made by the people of Burundi, supports the Burundian government and the opposition in trying to reach an agreement through dialogue and consultations, and supports the East African Community in playing a leading role in the mediation and good offices on the question of Burundi.

China is of the view that the international community should fully respect the sovereignty of Burundi and assess the positive efforts of the government and the improvement of the situation of the country in an objective manner. China is ready to work actively with the rest of the international community towards the achievement of a peaceful and political settlement of the question of Burundi at an early date.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
