UN human rights expert highly commends China's achievements in right to food

2019-10-24 03:22

On 24 October, the Third Committee of the 74th UN General Assembly held an interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal ELVER.

Liu Hua, Special Representative for Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, said that the right to food is the most basic human right and the basis for the realization of other rights. The eradication of hunger is an important part of the 2030 sustainable development agenda, and ensuring the right to food is essential for countries to eliminate inequalities and promote the implementation of sustainable development goals.

At present, countries worldwide still faces urgent threats such as food crisis. The international community should strengthen cooperation, create an international environment conducive to ensuring food security, pay more attention to the demands of developing countries, reduce trade barriers, and improve agricultural technology and increase funds for the least developed countries, so as to improve the level of global agricultural production and food security. All countries have the obligation to strengthen help and support for the population in poverty-stricken areas, and leave no one behind.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to the right to food of nearly 1.4 billion people. In 2018, China's total grain output reached 657.89 million tons, exceeding 650 million tons in four consecutive years. China, with 7% of the world's arable land, manages to feed about 20% of the world's population, effectively ensuring people's right to food. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with multilateral mechanisms including the Special Rapporteur on the right to food and continue to make greater contribution to ensuring the food security of the world.

UN Special Rapporteur, Ms Hilal ELVER highly commends China's tremendous achievements in poverty alleviation, hunger reduction and the protection of peoples right to food, which is significant contribution to the world. China's experience in poverty reduction and development can be shared with all parties. The Special Rapporteur looks forward to working with Chinese Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
