2004-11-23 00:00

On 23 November, Resolution on "Enhancing capacity-building in global public health" drafted by China was adopted unanimously at the 59th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution calls on the international community to attach great importance to such major diseases as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as well as the harmful effects brought about by SARS, avian influenza and other infectious diseases. It emphasizes that countries should strengthen their capacity building in public health, establish and raise the efficiency of their public health mechanism, and conduct international and regional cooperation on the basis of the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. The resolution also encourages UN Member States and the UN specialized agencies to offer technologies and other assistance to the developing countries, so as to reinforce their capacity building in public health. Resolution under the same name drafted by China was firstly adopted at last year's UN General Assembly. This year, the resolution has once again received extensive support from the UN Member States with 167 countries participating as co-sponsors.
