On June 7, the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the China-tabled resolution on the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

The Resolution makes it clear that all civilizational achievements constitute the collective heritage of humankind, advocates respect for the diversity of civilizations, and highlights the role of the dialogue among civilizations in upholding world peace, promoting common development, enhancing human welfare, and achieving common progress. It calls for equal dialogue and mutual respect among civilizations, which fully embodies the essence of the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and decides to establish June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

In introducing the draft resolution at the plenary meeting of the General Assembly, Ambassador Fu Cong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, said that today, confronted with multiple cascading and interlocking crises and challenges, our world is entering a new era of instability and change, putting humanity once again at the crossroads of history.

At this pivotal juncture, China proposes the establishment of the  International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations as an effective means to eliminate discrimination and prejudice, enhance mutual understanding and trust, promote greater interrelatedness among peoples, and strengthen solidarity and cooperation, with the aim of injecting greater positivity to the unity of the human society in addressing common challenges. This reflects China's firm support for multilateralism and the work of the United Nations, as well as our responsible role as a major country amid once-in-a-century changes.

Ambassador Fu said that the resolution invites all Member States and UN agencies to commemorate the International Day. China encourages all stakeholders to organize events and activities in observance of the International Day guided by the GA resolution to advocate respect for the diversity of civilizations, promote universal values common to humanity, give due regard to the inter-generational transmission of and innovation in civilizations, and galvanize interaction and cooperation among cultures and peoples, so as to achieve shared prosperity and progress of human civilizations.

In the press interview after the adoption of the resolution, Ambassador Fu stressed that President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Civilization Initiative in March last year, making a sincere appeal to the world for in-depth exchanges and mutual understanding among civilizations and progress of human society. The Initiative has been warmly received by the international community. The wide support of the international community for the establishment of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations fully demonstrates that the Global Civilization Initiative is in line with the trend and needs of the times, and that China's visions and solutions are increasingly becoming an international consensus.
