Explanatory Statement by Counsellor YAO Shaojun of the Chinese Delegation Before the Adoption of the Draft Resolution "Human Rights Situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran" at the Third Committee of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly

2017-11-14 00:57

Mr. Chairman,

It is China’s consistent position that all countries should handle differences in the area of human rights through constructive dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect. China rejects politicization of human rights issues and the practice of exerting pressure on other countries under the banner of human rights. We are against having country-specific human rights resolutions. Given the above, China will vote against the draft resolution entitled “Human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

The international community need to view the progress Iran has made and the challenges it faces in the area of human rights from a holistic and objective perspective, and engage Iran in constructive dialogue and cooperation, instead of single-mindedly making accusations and pursuing pressure through country-specific human rights resolutions.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
