On 21 November 2024, the Steering Committee of the China-UN Peace and Development Fund held its ninth meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Ambassador Fu Cong and Mr. Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of China and the United Nations respectively, signed the Addendum to the agreement between the Chinese Government and United Nations which confirms that China will continue to make contributions to the China-UN Peace and Development Fund for an additional five-year period from 2026-2030. Members of the Steering Committee including Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Shen Bo, Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Mr. He Zhenguo, Director-General of the Department of Administrative and Law Enforcement of the Ministry of Finance of China and representatives of the management team of the Fund participated the meeting.
With 160 United Nations projects in the field of peace and development supported by the Chinese Government of China through the Fund and more than 100 countries benefiting from those projects, Ambassador Fu Cong stressed that China is providing strong support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and United Nations initiatives. The Fund serves as an important platform for cooperation between China and the United Nations in promoting global development and addressing security challenges. Ambassador Fu Cong highlighted that China firmly supports the role of the United Nations and will work closely with the United Nations to practice true multilateralism through the Fund and make greater contributions to global peace, security and development by advancing implementation of the Pact for the Future, the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative guided by the commitment to building a community of shared future for human kind.
Mr. Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese Government for establishing and making contributions to the Fund. He highly appreciated the achievements made by the Fund, and expected the Fund to carry out integrated projects in peace and development and attract development agencies and investment banks to build partnership with the Fund so as to expand its influence.
The Steering Committee meeting reviewed and endorsed the proposed projects for 2024, and conducted in-depth discussions on the UNPDF's operation and management.
