2012-02-01 22:58

Deputy Secretary-General Migiro,

Under-Secretary-General Akasaka,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening!

Welcome to tonight's performance. As you may know, today is the tenth day of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Chinese people across the world are still in a happy mood of celebration. So please allow me to extend, on behalf of my colleagues from the Chinese Mission, our new year's greetings to all of you. I wish you good health and every success in the Year of the Dragon!

The performance tonight is about intangible cultural heritage in China. Intangible cultural heritage is an important part of the cultural treasure of mankind. It is a reflection of the time-honored civilization of humanity. It vividly records the history and artistic progress of different races and cultures.

Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage is a lofty task facing the entire human society. It is a mission that the United Nations has long been committed to. The Chinese government has also made enormous efforts and played a vital part in protecting the world's intangible cultural heritage.

Tonight, a group of more than 400 artists and students from China will stage a fantastic show on China's intangible cultural heritage. Their performance will offer us a good opportunity to appreciate the richness, diversity, beauty and charm of the Chinese culture. I hope the performance will also lift our awareness of intangible cultural heritage and make us work harder to protect it and pass it on to future generations.

In closing, I would like to express my sincere thanks to our performers and all the people who have made this event possible. I wish the performance a complete success.
