President Nasser,

Under-Secretary-General Sha Zukang,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon!

At the outset, on behalf of the Chinese Mission to the UN, I congratulate the launch of China Hong Kong Gourmet Week as a part of the celebrations for the 2012 UN Public Service Day.

As a Chinese saying goes, "food is the first necessity of the people". The Chinese people put great emphasis on what they eat. Chinese cuisine is an important component of the fine traditional culture of the Chinese nation. Our friends present today may have never been to China and can't speak Chinese, but you must have tasted delicious Chinese food.

Today's China Hong Kong Gourmet Festival will present to our distinguished guests the charm of Cantonese cuisine, which is a very unique style of cuisine in China. Cantonese cuisine originated in Southeast China. It features carefully chosen and prepared ingredients and beautiful decorations. Cantonese dishes often seek a fine combination of color, smell, taste, look and even the shape of containers. I suggest that you use chopsticks today. By tasting Chinese food in the typical Chinese way, you will have a better firsthand experience of the richness of the Chinese food culture.

Today's gourmet festival is also part of the 2012 UN Public Service Day celebrations. The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community, highlight the contribution of public service and encourage more people to join the public sector and serve the society. By launching the gourmet festival, our organizers are meant to award the outstanding public servants with tasty food. What a great idea. I would like to thank the Department for Economic and Social Affairs and China International Cultural Communication Center for the efforts they have put into organizing this event. I am convinced that the event will play an important role in expanding the influence of the UN Public Service Day and promoting the friendly exchanges between China and the rest of the world. I wish the gourmet festival a complete success.

Thank you.
