Your Excellency Ambassador Moraes Cabral,

Your Excellency Ambassador Norachit Sinhaseni,

Your Excellency Ambassador Tsuneo Nishida,

Mrs. Lydia Reinhold,

Mr. Li Guodong,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the outset, on behalf of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations, I congratulate on the opening at the United Nations of the joint Western and Chinese painting exhibition by Mrs. Lydia Reinhold and Mr. Li Guodong.

The works on displayed today were jointly created by Mrs. Lydia Reinhold and Mr. Li Guodong over the past year. During the painting process, Mr. Li would first write Chinese calligraphy on a piece of Xuanzhi, a special type of high quality paper made particularly for Chinese painting and calligraphy. He would leave half of the space for Mrs. Reinhold’s Western style painting. Today’s exhibition is the result of their joint efforts and creativity. The works are a fine combination of the charm and beauty of Chinese calligraphy and Western painting. They are innovative and inspiring. The artistic world in New York is enchanted by the works.

By profession, Mr. Li is a traditional Chinese medicine doctor with high attainments. With a caring heart, he has helped many patients out of the pain of diseases. Mr. Li is also an artist with a unique perspective on the Chinese culture and Chinese calligraphy. He has made great achievements in this field. Today’s exhibition features a joint venture of Mr. Li and Ms. Reinhold. It is a symbol of friendly cultural exchanges between countries and a fine example of friendly ties between peoples.

The United Nations has all along advocated multicultural harmony and prosperity. Today’s exhibition not only champions the ideal that different cultures should respect and learn from each other, and seek common development and prosperity, but also gives vivid expression to the purposes and spirit of the United Nations. It is of great significance and relevance.

I wish the exhibition a complete success.

Thank you.
