Remarks by Ambassador Geng Shuang at the Peacebuilding Commission Ambassadorial-level Meeting on Peacebuilding in Honduras

2023-06-26 18:00

Mr. President,

China thanks all briefers for their briefings.

Under the leadership of President Castro, Honduras has been persistent in its people-centered, active efforts for refounding the state and has adopted a series of measures in upholding the rule of law, improving people’s livelihood, fighting corruption and organized crimes, strengthening public services, empowering women and youth, and ensuring fair elections, all of which have consolidated effectively the country’s peace and stability. The country’s successful practices have provided valuable experience for international efforts in peacebuilding. China appreciates such contribution.

It is our hope that the PBC will continue to leverage its own strengths to provide more extensive and robust support to Honduras’ national and sustainable development under the framework of peacebuilding. First, it is important to fully respect the sovereignty and ownership of Honduras and listen to the needs and thoughts of the Honduran Government in a timely manner in terms of cooperation modalities and initiatives, among others. Second, it is important to focus on the country’s priorities for the next phase of administration in alignment with the 2030 Agenda to curate well-designed cooperation programs conducive to strengthening the internal drivers of development. Third,it is important for the PBC to act as a convener and coordinator in mobilizing broad-based resources from UN entities, the PBF, and international financial institutions, so as to build powerful synergies for the development of Honduras.

Mr. President,

Not long ago, President Castro paid a state visit to China, during which she and President Xi Jinping had an in-depth exchange of experience on national governance. The visit opened a new chapter of China-Honduras relations. China firmly supports Honduras in its efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and independence, promote development, and improve people’s livelihood. We firmly support Honduras in its own choice of development path suited to its national conditions. We also firmly support the country’s efforts for promoting socioeconomic development. China stands ready to continue deepening mutually beneficial cooperation with Honduras and work with Honduras to make greater contributions to maintaining international and regional peace and security and promoting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Thank you, Mr. President.
