Ambassador Zhang Jun Attended UN Meeting on Security of Major Sporting Events and Introduced China's Contributions

On 3 February, the International Expert Group Meeting on the Security of Major Sporting Events and Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism was held in UNHQ. Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Permanent Representatives of Qatar and the Republic of Korea attended the meeting. Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China, attended and addressed the opening session.

Zhang said that terrorism is a common enemy of mankind. The international community should foster a sense of community with a shared future for mankind, strengthen international counter-terrorism cooperation, jointly respond to the threat of terrorism and violent extremism. Sport is the hallmark of social development and human progress. The Olympic Spirit stands for solidarity, friendship and peace. Advocating the value of sport and championing its spirit are important means for the promotion of peace, tolerance and understanding.

Zhang said that China has a set of effective practices of security and preventive counter-terrorism and deradicalization measures for such events, which China is ready to share with the parties through multiple channels. In 2022, China will host the 24th Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. Beijing will become the first city to have held both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Zhang also introduced the preparatory work of security and counter-terrorism of Beijing Winter Olympic Games. He said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the security work of the Winter Olympics, and will ensure security, smoothness and success of the event and present a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent Winter Olympics to the world.

After the opening session, Ambassador Zhang, USG Voronkov and others briefed international media. Zhang spoke about China's engagement in international counter-terrorism cooperation and the preparatory work for Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

Counselor Cheng Lie of the Chinese Mission spoke in detail about the security and counter-terrorism work for the 2022 Winter Olympics and had interactions with other participants during the first session of the meeting.

The meeting launched the Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events and Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism and attracted active participation of UN member states. China provided financial support to the programme through China-UN Development Fund, demonstrating China's firm commitment and concrete contribution to international counter-terrorism cooperation.
