2020-02-03 07:32

On February 3, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the UN, Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism of the UN, and Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, gave a group interview to Chinese and foreign media on the margins of the UN meeting on security of major sporting events. Ambassador Zhang called for international cooperation to fight the novel coronavirus and avoid overreaction. Senior UN officials expressed confidence in China's fight against the epidemic.

Zhang emphasized that in the face of the epidemic, it is vital for the international community to maintain solidarity and cooperation. China appreciates the understanding and support of international organizations such as the UN, the WHO, and relevant countries. At the same time, we call on all countries to adopt recommendations of WHO, not to overreact, not to adopt unnecessary measures of interference in international travel or suspension of flights, etc., and not to take discriminatory actions against China and Chinese nationals.

Zhang said that now is a crucial moment and the situation remains challenging. At the same time, we are full of confidence. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, we are taking all measures to fight against the epidemic, treat patients and control the spread of the epidemic. Medical teams from all over the country have arrived in Wuhan, new hospitals have been put into use, and a large number of medical supplies have been delivered. More lives have been saved, and more patients have recovered. This shows that facing the outbreak, the determination of the Chinese government and people is firm, and the measures adopted are timely, powerful, unprecedented and responsible, and the effects are being shown.

USG Voronkov said that sports security and health security are both interconnected issues. He expressed his feeling of solidarity with China, saying the Chinese government has taken a series of measures and he believes that China will overcome the difficulties in a short period of time.

Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, conveyed the sympathies and condolences of the government of Qatar. She said that Qatar and China enjoy a historical strategic relationship, and Qatar is one of the first countries to lend support. Qatar has all the faith in China in dealing with the epidemic. It is not the first time that the world faces an epidemic, but China has always shown the leadership.

During the opening session of the Meeting on the Security of Major Sporting Events, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations, said in his remarks that at this difficult time, he appreciates and supports the effort made by the Chinese government and people in fighting the epidemic, and believes that China will overcome the difficulties.
