On 2 March, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations gave a briefing to mainstream media at the UN on China's Presidency of the Security Council for the month of March. Responding to questions from the correspondents, Ambassador Zhang spoke about China's battle against COVID-19, international cooperation on this front and China's effort to secure economic and social development.

Ambassador Zhang said that China's fight against COVID-19 has made good progress, and the situation is getting better. Facing the severe challenge posed by the outbreak, the whole country is mobilized under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. The most comprehensive, strict and thorough prevention and control measures have been taken. The world has witnessed the strong resolve of the Chinese government, the power of a united Chinese nation and the strength of China's system. The world has also seen the touching stories of Chinese medical workers and people from all walks of life who are fighting against the epidemic with dedication and sacrifice. With China's hard efforts, the positive momentum is growing in the work of prevention and control. The number of new cases is declining. On 1 March, there were 202 newly confirmed cases in Mainland China. The number of cured cases is rising. As of 1 March, a total of 44,462 patients have been cured and discharged from hospital. Medical research has achieved initial results.

Ambassador Zhang said that China will continue to carry out international cooperation in an open, transparent and responsible manner. COVID-19 is a common challenge facing the entire humanity. China is fighting not just for itself, but also for the world. We are highly commended by the United Nations, the WHO and the international community for the huge sacrifice we have made and the positive results achieved. China treats its own people and people of other countries in the same way and applies prevention and control measures in a non-discriminatory manner. China has taken concrete actions to provide necessary assistance and safeguard to people in need. Guided by the vision of a community of a shared future, China is doing everything possible to contain the epidemic within its borders, and at the same time, following very closely the changing situation in other parts of the world. Along with relevant countries and international organizations, China is sharing experience and providing necessary assistance, contributing to the joint response to the outbreak and the maintenance of global public health security.

Ambassador Zhang said that while battling the disease, China is taking care of its economic and social development. As the world's second largest economy, China is keenly aware of its responsibility. China is taking a series of strong measures, including policy support in fiscal, financial, taxation and industrial fields, to facilitate the restoration of work and production and to boost the economy. With the strong resilience of China's economy, broad domestic markets and sound industrial foundation, the positive trend of the Chinese economy remains unchanged. China will minimize the impact of the outbreak and work hard to meet the targets of economic and social development of this year. There is every reason to be confident in the future of China's economy.
