Ambassador Zhang Jun: China is ready to make greater contributions to UN Peacekeeping

2020-05-29 21:58

On May 29, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, delivered a video message on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

72 years ago today, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, the first UN peacekeeping mission, began operating in Palestine. Today, on this International Day of UN Peacekeepers, I would like to extend deepest respect and thanks to all the peacekeepers, more than 95,000 of them, deployed in 13 mission areas, and pay highest tribute to the more than 3,900 peacekeepers who gave their lives for the cause of peace.

Peacekeeping carries the mission of peace. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the UN. China highly values the role played by the Organization. We are a strong supporter and an active participant of UN peacekeeping. President Xi Jinping made a series of important proposals and solemn commitments at the UN Peacekeeping Summit in 2015. These commitments have been implemented. Now, China is the second largest financial contributor and a major troop contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. China is also one of the champions on safety and security of peacekeepers in Secretary-General’ s A4P initiative. 2,500 peacekeepers from China are currently serving in 9 mission areas. Eighteen Chinese peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice for peace. With the joint efforts of China and other countries, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution for the first time on the safety and security of peacekeepers, Resolution 2518. China will continue taking concrete actions to honor its commitment to multilateralism and world peace and contribute even more to UN peacekeeping.
