Remarks by Ambassador Zhang Jun at the Extraordinary Virtual Ministerial Pledging Conference for UNRWA

2020-06-23 04:44

Distinguished Ministers,

Excellencies,

China highly appreciates Jordan and Sweden for hosting this extraordinary pledging conference.

This conference is convened at a critical moment. As the theme underlines, we are living in a challenging world that demands collective actions. China commends UNRWA for its dedicated and vital service of assisting Palestinian refugees over the years. UNRWA's role in advancing their well-being, dignity and development is indispensable, especially in the context of COVID-19.

Taking this opportunity, I would like to announce that, China will make contribution of 1 million USD to UNRWA this year. In addition, we will provide anti-pandemic medical supplies to the health institutions of UNRWA, and through UNRWA, provide needed PPEs to Palestinian refugees in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Over the past several months, China has given a large amount of medical assistance to Palestine people, including seventy-two thousand testing kits, eleven thousand N95 and twenty thousand surgical masks, ten thousand protective suits, and other PPEs and infrared thermometers.

We have also shared experience on COVID-19 control and treatment with Palestine. In addition to video conferences with Palestinian experts, this month, China has sent a medical team to Palestine to help with the fight against COVID-19 on the front-lines. Chinese experts from the team also had exchanges on the pandemic with representatives of UNRWA, WHO and UNICEF.

Excellencies,

China's position on the Palestine question is known to all. We stand with the Palestinian people in their just cause to restore legitimate national rights. We resolutely oppose illegal annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and call on all parties concerned to uphold the international law and relevant UN resolutions, and adhere to the "two-state solution". At this particularly difficult time, let's work more closely with each other in the pursuit of comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Thank you for your attention.
