Remarks by Ambassador Zhang Jun at the Forty-fourth Annual Meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China

2020-11-13 06:14

Mr. Chairman,
Excellencies,
Colleagues,

It's great to attend this meeting. COVID-19 has brought formidable challenges to countries' socioeconomic development, especially developing countries. China attaches great importance of the role of G77 and China. Under the leadership of Guyana, the G77 and China has been a strong voice for international cooperation for development. China appreciates the contribution made by the Group to combating COVID-19 and promoting recovery. I also congratulate Guinea for its upcoming Presidency in 2021.

With rising uncertainties and destabilizing factors, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda will be a more difficult task. As a major cooperation platform for developing countries, the G77 and China, which shoulders significant responsibilities, should work more closely to achieve common development.

We must uphold multilateralism. We need to maintain the UN-centered international system and the international order based on international law, reject unilateralism, protectionism and bullying practice, continuously improve global governance system, and promote an open world economy.

We must prioritize development. The international community should prioritize development in macro policy coordination, focus on the difficulties of developing countries such as financing, increase input in poverty reduction, health, education and employment, effectively tackle climate change, narrow digital divide, and promote green, inclusive, and resilient recovery.

We must build partnerships. The international community should take North-South cooperation as the main channel, observe the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and urge developed countries to honor commitments of financing and technology assistance to help developing countries build capacity, including providing $100 billion annually in climate finance and eliminating technological barriers. Developing countries should enhance solidarity and mutual trust to jointly maintain our common interests and development space. We should also tap the potential of South-South cooperation, support Uganda on hosting a fruitful Third South Summit, and strengthen cooperation in international organizations such as WTO and WHO.

Colleagues,

China shares development opportunities with other developing countries to achieve common progress.

-China will enhance its economic cooperation with developing countries. For years, China has contributed more than 30% to global growth. Having contained COVID-19, China's economy registered positive growth in the first three quarters this year. China's economic development will continue to inject momentum and bring opportunities to international cooperation and global recovery.

-China will continue to extend assistance to developing countries in fighting the pandemic. So far, we have given help to over 150 countries and international organizations, exported 179 billion masks, 1.73 billion protective suits, and 543 million testing packs. China's vaccines will be made a global public good and benefit developing countries first.

-China will make more contributions to the implementation of 2030 Agenda. While putting people at the center, China will lift all its rural poor out of poverty this year, meeting SDG1 ten years ahead of schedule. China is ready to share its experience with developing countries that look forward to pursuing self-development.

The world is a community with countries sharing one future. China is proud of being a developing country as well as a member of G77 and China. China will continue to stand firmly with developing countries and safeguard our common interests, to build a better future for all.

Thank you.
