Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on US Senator Brownback's Comments on the HK Issue

2004-03-11 00:00

Q: US Senator Brownback wrote an article in the Asian Wall Street Journal recently, in which he claimed that the events in Hong Kong are not merely China's internal affairs . If Beijing continue to frustrate the will of democracy of the Hong Kong people, US must begin to question  whether or not the Basic Law is a suitable foundation for Hong Kong's government. What's your comment on that?

A: The remarks of the US senator could only indicate his lack of understanding of Hong Kong's past and present.

 Hong Kong
is China's Hong Kong, and the affairs of Hong Kong are the internal affairs of China. The Chinese Government and its people have the resolve, capability and wisdom to maintain and safeguard the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. We do not need any foreign interference, which will do no good to anyone.
