Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on the Entry into Force of the Kyoto Protocol

2005-02-18 00:00

Q: The Kyoto Protocol came into effect yesterday. As a country with the second largest emission of carbon dioxide, what measures will China take?

A: We are glad to see the Kyoto Protocol became effective yesterday. The Kyoto Protocol demands that the developed countries reduce or limit the emission of green house gases from 2008 to 2012. The Protocol, as an important document to implement the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the legal basis for the international community to take concrete measures to cope with climate changes, should be put into action as early as possible.

The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol indicates a new stage in which concrete measures are to be taken to cope with climate change. It will promote more effective international cooperation on dealing with climate change and will accumulate experience of handling climate change for the international community. We call on those developed countries to sign the protocol as soon as possible so as to fulfill the measures taken by the international community to cope with climate change.
