Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on A Report Involving China Issued by An American Organization on Religions

2005-05-18 00:00

Q: Recently, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom released its 2005 report, criticizing the religion policies of China and other countries. What comment does China have?

A: The so-called US Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report again, making arbitrary criticism of some developing countries including China. In its part involving China, the report groundlessly attacked China's policies on religion, ethnic groups and other fields. We are as always firmly opposed to the accusation.

The Chinese Government protects its citizens' freedom of religious belief according to law. The Chinese citizens enjoy wide and full freedom of religious beliefs, which is an oblivious fact to all. The above-mentioned commission repeatedly interfered in the internal affairs of China under the pretext of religious freedom and undermined China-US relations. Such behavior is unpopular and doomed to failure.

We advise the commission to turn on a correct track and stop interfering in other countries' internal affairs with the pretext of religious problems, so as to avoid any further damage to its own image and obstacles to relationship between the US and other countries and the exchanges between the commission itself and the relevant parties.
