Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Liu Jianchao's Comment on the Meeting between DPRK Leader Kim Jong Il and ROK President's Special Envoy Chung Dong-Young

2005-06-24 00:00

Q: What comment do you have on the meeting between Kim Jong Il, Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Chung Dong-Young, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Korea?

A: The Chinese side supports the positive efforts from both southern and northern side of the Korean Peninsula to improve and develop their relations and safeguard the peace and stability of the Peninsula. We are pleased to see the outcome of the meeting.

China has all along been committed to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and maintained that a nuclear-weapon-free Peninsula should be realized. We will continue to make unremitting efforts to this end. We sincerely hope that all parties concerned would work together to seize the opportunity, display more flexibility and promote the early resumption of the Six-Party Talks, so as to push forward the peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula with a constructive attitude.
