Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on the Reform of the UN Security Council

2008-01-30 00:00

China's position on the Security Council reform has remained unchanged. China supports a justified and necessary reform of the Security Council to enhance its authority and efficiency. We always support developing countries to play a bigger role in the United Nations, including the Security Council. The priority of the reform is to increase the representation of developing countries, particularly African countries in the Security Council. As it bears on the future development of the UN and the immediate interest of all nations, the reform should proceed in a gradual manner, and start from relatively easier issues with the most consensus. There should be extensive and democratic deliberation to accommodate interest and concerns of all parties, and reach the broadest consensus on the reform plan.
