Since the occurrence of the earthquake, the United Nations has provided timely and effective assistance to the affected areas in Haiti. The Chinese government appreciates the efforts made by the United Nations to assist Haiti and will do what it can to continue to support the leadership and coordination role of the United Nations in post-disaster reconstruction in Haiti.

Mr. Under-Secretary-General,

The Chinese government sent an international rescue and relief team to the affected areas immediately after the earthquake.China has provided timely assistance in the value of 73 million yuan (about 10.64 million US dollars) to Haiti through bilateral and multilateral channels to provide cash and emergency relief supplies. We have also sent a medical care and epidemic prevention team and provided medical equipment to Haiti. In the light of the current situation and needs on the ground, the Chinese government has decided to provide an additional 20 million yuan (about 2.92 million US dollars) worth of tents to the Haitian government. We are well aware of the urgent needs of tents in the affected areas of Haiti. The Chinese Government is now vigorously preparing the supplies and arranging for their delivery to ensure that they will arrive in Haiti at an early date.
