UN Security Council Holds its Sixth Annual Consultation with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union

On June 13, the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council held their sixth annual consultation at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The meeting was co-chaired by Ambassador Li Baodong, President of the Security Council for the month of June and Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, and Mr. Lazare Makayat Safouesse, rotating President of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and Permanent Representative of the DRC to the AU. The meeting focused on issues such as the cooperation between the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council, Guinea Bissau, Sudan and South Sudan, Mali and Somalia.

The two sides emphasized that the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council should strengthen coordination and consultation on issues of common interest to meet the security challenges facing Africa. The two sides agreed that the seventh annual meeting of the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council will be held in July 2013 at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
