2015-02-23 12:13

On February 23, 2015, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters in New York.

Wang Yi thanked Ban Ki-moon for specially attending the UN Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate proposed by China. He said that China's initiative was widely supported and welcomed by the international community, and representatives from over 80 countries all asked for a speech. This fully indicates that under the turbulent international situation which is even referred to as "disorderly" by some people, all parties focus more on how the UN especially the UNSC to play their due role and fulfill their due responsibilities, and hold that on the occasion of 70th anniversary of the UN, it is necessary to reiterate their commitment to the purpose and principle of the UN Charter and reaffirm the basic norms governing the international relations defined by the Charter. Today's meeting sent out an explicit and unanimous signal to this end and opened the curtain of a series of celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN as well as the victory of the world anti-fascist war this year. China will enhance cooperation with the UN to well organize these activities, truly taking history as a mirror and opening up the future.

Ban Ki-moon tanked China for successfully holding the UNSC Open Debate, and stressed that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN, this meeting is very timely and important, which the UN fully supports. The UN thanks the support of the Chinese government to its work in safeguarding global peace. Ban Ki-moon expressed that China also plays an important role in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development. It is hoped that China will continuously back and participate in the negotiation on the post-2015 development agenda, the conference on climate change in Paris as well as the conference on development financing and make its contributions to these ends.
