Starting from April 1, Ambassador Wang Guangya, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, is the rotating president of the Security Council. China assumes the presidency again after 14 months.

On April 4, the Security Council meeting, presided over by Ambassador Wang Guangya, adopted unanimously Resolution 1594 on one-month extension of the UN peacekeeping operation in Cote d'Ivoire. On the same day, Ambassador Wang also chaired the first consultations of all the Council members, which adopted Council's program of work for April. Ambassador Wang then held a press conference to brief the media on the relevant arrangements of the Council. He emphasized that as a permanent member and the current president of the Security Council, China will abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and act in the spirit of justice, democracy and transparency, so as to reinforce the Council's efforts for seeking solutions to hot-spot issues and fulfill the sacred mission entrusted by the UN Charter on maintaining world peace and security.

It is reported that in April, the Security Council will conduct deliberations on issues of the Middle East, DRC, Iraq, Central African Republic, Haiti, Bougainville, and MINURSO as well as on relevant work of committees on counter-terrorism and non-proliferation. In addition, the Security Council will dispatch a mission to Haiti this month. In general, the Council will continue to focus on issues of Africa, Iraq and the Middle East.
