In the evening of June 12, the "Chinese Film Festival" sponsored by the Permanent Mission of China to the Untied Nations was opened at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium at the UN headquarters. In the evening of June 13, Ambassador Wang, Permanent Representative of China to the UN, and his wife Cong Jun held a cocktail reception for this occasion. UN Under Secretaries-General Anwarul Chowdhury, Chen Jian and Nobuaki Tanaka, as well as permanent representatives and their wives of more than 20 countries, including Spain, Norway, Cote d'lvoire and the Laos attended the reception. Many media representatives and people of other circles were also present at the reception and watched the following film "Jasmine Women". The auditorium was packed to its full capacity. The film was warmly received by the audience.

Ambassador Wang told his guests during his welcoming remarks that film is an art for the entire mankind and is also a global language. It transcends races and cultures, deepens understanding among nations, and harmonizes different civilizations. He said that over the past 100 years, the Chinese films have acquiring their own features and unique style. The recent years have witnessed a surge of Chinese films, and its industry has become more and more internationalized. Ambassador Wang expressed his hope that the "Chinese Film Festival" will give the audience a glimpse of how ordinary Chinese people live as well as their fine sentiments.

Under Secretary-General Chowdhury conveyed, on behalf of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a message of best wishes and warm congratulations. He talked about the major positive role played by China in world affairs. He said it is the right time to bring this art form of Chinese cinema to the UN. Films are the most powerful tool to promote dialogue and understanding. They also provide the best opportunity to look into other countries' culture and society. The "Chinese Film Festival" opens a window to Chinese culture, its way of life, its value, and its civilization. He has worked with the UN for many years, and this is the first time for China to hold a Chinese film festival at the UN. Such initiative needs praise and appreciation. He strongly encourages such efforts and hopes to see the Chinese film festival every year.

At the Festival, the Chinese Mission displayed books, DVD, postcards on Chinese culture, diplomacy, and its scenery, which all became very popular gifts for the audience.

This current film festival will end on June 15, showing four films – Breaking the Silence, Jasmine Women, Not One Less and the Guasha Treatment. They are different in theme and style. The audiences find them both realistic and moving. They warmly welcome this festival, which provides them with an opportunity to appreciate the art of Chinese film and better understand the Chinese culture and society. They hope to see more Chinese films and other forms of Chinese art at the United Nations.
