China makes a contribution to support the peace process in Darfur

2008-03-28 00:00

On 28 March 2008, China contributed half a million U.S. dollars to the Trust Fund for the AU-UN Joint Mediation Support Team (JMST) for Darfur.

In a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, H.E. Ambassador Liu Zhenmin presented a $500,000 check to H.E. Mr. Warren Sach, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Controller.

The Trust Fund was established by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in September 2007 to support the mediation work led by the special envoys of the United Nations and the African Union for Darfur.

China's contribution to the Trust Fund reflects its sincere wish to see an early settlement of the Darfur issue.  Mr. Sach expressed his appreciation of the contribution, saying that this generous gesture represented China's firm support for the ongoing political process in resolving the Darfur issue.
