Spokesperson's Comment on Belarus

2020-08-18 01:08

Q:It is reported that the Security Council discussed the situation in Belarus in closed consultation today. What is China's comment?

A: Certain Council members raised the situation in Belarus in informal closed virtual consultation of the Security Council on 18 August 2020. Ambassador Zhang Jun, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, opposed such move and explained China's position in the discussion.

Ambassador Zhang emphasized, what's happening in Belarus is the country's internal affair, and does not pose any threat to regional or international peace and security. China is against Security Council discussion on this matter.

China respects countries' own choices of development paths and domestic and foreign policies. We stand against any attempt to create social division and turbulence in Belarus by external forces.

Ambassador Zhang urged relevant countries to abide by international law and basic norms of international relations, observe the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Belarus, and refrain from interfering in Belarus' internal affairs.

China believes the future of Belarus must and can only be decided by its own people. China hopes and believes that the situation in Belarus will stabilize soon.
