Comments by Spokesperson of Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations on Remarks on China by US Secretary of State and Secretary of Education

2020-10-01 23:59

On 1 October, the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly held the High-Level Meeting on the 25th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women (BEIJING+25). US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos issued a statement and made an intervention respectively, fabricating lies against China and creating political confrontation. At a time when other UN Member States are strengthening solidarity and promoting the cause of women, it is disgraceful for the United States to act against the aspiration of Member States and the trend of the times and to manipulate domestic politics. China is firmly opposed to such practice.

In the past week, China and other UN Member States were calling for solidarity and cooperation to combat COVID-19. Meanwhile, some US politicians were abusing the UNGA platform to spread political virus and viciously attack the Communist Party of China in an attempt to sow discord between the CPC and the Chinese people. This shows their ignorance and is doomed to fail.

Today, a handful of US politicians told more lies. The so-called “forced sterilization to Uygurs” is a shear fabrication. Demographic statistics in Xinjiang show that Uygur population increased from 10.1715 million to 12.7184 million from 2010 to 2018, an increase of 2.5469 million people or 25.04%, compared with the average population growth of 13.99% in Xinjiang and the 2% growth of Han people. In the US, however, sexual and racial discrimination makes the situation extremely difficult for women of ethnic minorities. 40% of African-American women and 46% of Hispanic-American women work in low-wage jobs. The problem of child marriage is serious in the US. From 2000 to 2015, over 200,000 underages got married and the overwhelming majority of them were girls.

At today’s meeting, the Chinese leadership proposed the convening in 2025 of another Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, and announced that China will donate another 10 million dollars to UN Women in the coming five years and will continue to fund the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. In contrast, the US has yet to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. According to UN Women, up to 70 percent of US women had experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Some US politicians lie and cheat as a habit. They maliciously create political confrontation and undermine multilateral cooperation. The United States, going against the trend of the times, is becoming the biggest destroyer of the existing international order and trying all means to take the world back to the “jungle age”. Neither the Chinese people nor people of the world will accept it. China will continue to work with all countries to uphold and advance multilateralism and safeguard the UN-centered international system and the international order based on international law.
