Remarks by Ambassador Dai Bing at High-Level Virtual Side Event on Sudan

2021-09-30 12:45

Madam Chair,

I thank Secretary-General Guterres and Minister Søreide for convening this meeting. I also wish to welcome Prime Minister Hamdok for his presence and informative presentation.

Sudan has made remarkable process in political transition, economic reform and social integration. In this regard, China commends the diligence, resilience, unity and perseverance of the Sudanese authorities and people.

Sudan still faces multiple challenges. China fully supports the Juba Peace Agreement and hopes its implementation will provide the Sudanese people with an opportunity for intensive dialogue and common understanding for the country’s future. We call upon those armed groups who have not signed the agreement to join the peace process as soon as possible.

Inter-communal violence in Darfur is an old issue. Capacity of the Sudanese government to protect civilians needs to be strengthened. In this regard, China supports the lifting of the Security Council sanctions related to Sudan. Military means alone can’t resolve this issue. It requires comprehensive measures in the areas of law enforcement, reconciliation and economic development, etc.

Economic development is essential for the success of the political transition. Only by improving livelihood of the Sudanese people in an equal manner can the political process be sustainable. The international community should step up its efforts to help Sudan achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and fight the pandemic.

For years, China has been providing practical support to Sudan to the best of our ability. Recently, China has provided Sudan with medical supplies and COVID-19 vaccines. China will continue to stand with the Sudanese people and work towards lasting peace and development of Sudan.

Thank you, Madam Chair.
