The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund Held Its Sixth Steering Committee Meeting

2021-10-11 18:34

On 11 October 2021, the Sixth Steering Committee Meeting of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was held successfully via VTC. Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Ms. Maria-Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Chef de Cabinet of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, Mr. Liu Zhenmin Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Yang Tao, Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. He Zhenguo, Director-General of the Department of Administrative and Law Enforcement of China’s Ministry of Finance attended the meeting as members of the Steering Committee. The management team of UNPDF reported to the meeting.

Ambassador Zhang Jun said that since its establishment, the UNPDF has achieved remarkable results. It has vigorously safeguarded multilateralism, promoted peace, security and development in developing countries, especially in Africa, promoted the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and strongly supported the major initiatives of the UN. All these showed China’s contribution and responsibility as a major country. China has always been supporting the UN with concrete measures. China is currently the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget and peacekeeping assessments, and its scale of assessments to the UN has been growing continuously in recent years. Under this circumstance, China’s continued investment in and support for the UNPDF fully demonstrates its solemn political commitment and firm support for the UN.

Ambassador Zhang Jun emphasized that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 50th anniversary of the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the UN. The cooperation between China and the UN is on a new starting point. During the General Debate of the UN General Assembly last month, President Xi Jinping pointed out that true multilateralism must be upheld in the UN. President Xi also proposed the Global Development Initiative, which reflects the common expectations of the international community, especially developing countries. With multiple challenges in the front, more than ever, the international community needs to join hands to meet challenges and achieve common development. We expect that the UNPDF will firmly uphold true multilateralism, continue to build high-quality projects, develop diversified partnerships, be a model of high-standard management and achieve more positive outcomes. With the UNPDF as a platform, China is ready to deepen cooperation with the Secretariat and promote China-UN cooperation to a new height.

The UN Secretariat expresses its deep appreciation to the Chinese government for its generous contribution. In the past years, the UNPDF has played an important role in supporting the UN in responding to challenges in the field of international peace and security and in implementing of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At present, the COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading, the global economy is struggling to recover, the international cooperation is under unprecedented test, and multilateralism is the only way out. It is hoped that the UNPDF will continue to support the UN in playing a greater role.

The Steering Committee Meeting reviewed the overall work of the UNPDF, endorsed the proposed projects for 2021, and discussed the way forward, priorities, operations and management of the UNPDF, and made suggestions and recommendations to the Fund.

The UNPDF was announced to be established for ten years by President Xi Jinping at the summit meetings commemorating the UN’s 70th anniversary in September 2015. During the General Debate of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2020, President Xi Jinping announced that China will extend the UNPDF by five years after it expires in 2025. The UNPDF aims to support the work of the UN, promote multilateral cooperation, and make new contributions to world peace and development. Since its establishment, the UNPDF has supported nearly 100 projects and benefited more than 100 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania, defending the UN’s role through concrete actions and results.
