Statement by the Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations on the Remarks by the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations

2022-12-10 23:43

74 years ago, the UN Member States, through the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, made a strong commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights. On the occasion of the Human Rights Day, it is the shared responsibility of all Member States to reaffirm our collective commitment and accelerate actions through solidarity, unity and cooperation.

Promoting and protecting human rights is the unremitting pursuit of China. We uphold a people-centered approach and commit ourselves to realizing a happy life for all as the biggest human right. The human rights cause in China has achieved historic transformation and development. In recent years, Xinjiang has enjoyed sustained economic growth, social harmony and stability, better living standards, cultures thriving like never before, and freedom of religious beliefs and religious harmony. Tibet has been following a path from backwardness to progress, from poverty to prosperity, and from autocracy to democracy.

Some US politicians are obsessed with portraying themselves as human rights lecturers, keep fabricating lies and harping on the human rights conditions in developing countries, while never reflect on their own terrible human rights record, including the genocide of native Americans, systematic racial discrimination, gun violence threat to civilians, police brutality against ethnic minorities, and unilateral coercive measures against developing countries. This is such a glaring example of hypocrisy and double standards.

China categorically rejects the groundless allegation by some US politicians and is firmly against the interference of internal affairs of other countries in the name of human rights. Here is my word of advice to those US politicians: on this Human Rights Day, what you should do is to reflect on your own human rights violations and take concrete actions to address them, rather than carrying out another smear campaign against China and other developing countries. The world has already seen through your lies on China including Xinjiang and Tibet. Your attempts to use Xinjiang and Tibet related issues to destabilize China are doom to fail.
