Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Outgoing US Ambassador to China Max Baucus

2016-12-20 16:34

On December 20, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the outgoing US Ambassador to China Max Baucus.

Wang Yi fully recognized the positive efforts made by Max Baucus to developing China-US relations during his tenure as US Ambassador to China in recent 3 years, and hoped that he could continuously care for and support bilateral relationship after leaving his post. Wang Yi stressed that the healthy and stable development of China-US relations is of great significance to both countries and the world. President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama have guided China-US relations to achieve important progress at a strategic level through "Annenberg Estate Meeting", Night Talks at Yingtai", “Autumn Talks at White House”, "Long Talks at West Lake" and other meetings. There are certainly some contradictions between China and the US, and new problems will emerge. However, the common interests between both countries far outweigh the differences. Both China and the US should focus on cooperation and control differences, so as to ensure that bilateral relations can enjoy a smooth transition and move forward along the correct direction.

Max Baucus reviewed his work experience in China, and expressed that current bilateral relations are becoming increasingly firm and enjoy sound development. As two great powers, the US and China need each other more. The more stable bilateral relations are, the safer and more prosperous the world is. The US is willing to make efforts with China toward this goal. He himself will continuously play a positive role in it as well.
