On December 20, 2016 local time, the eighth China-UK Strategic Dialogue was held in London. State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson of the UK co-chaired the dialogue.

Yang Jiechi said that President Xi Jinping paid a successful state visit to the UK last year, and both sides agreed to jointly build the China-UK global comprehensive strategic partnership for the 21st century. Not long ago, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Theresa May met on the sidelines of the G20 Hangzhou Summit, reconfirming the general direction of the "Golden Era" of bilateral relations. China stands ready to work with the UK side to fully implement the important consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, strengthen strategic communication, enhance political mutual trust and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation so as to promote the continuous and in-depth development of bilateral relations under the new situation as well as world peace, stability and development.

Yang Jiechi stressed that both sides should take the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to intensify exchanges at high level and all levels, and push pragmatic cooperation in various fields including investment, trade, finance, innovation and infrastructure construction for new achievements. Both countries should push forward people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and strengthen communication and coordination within multilateral frameworks and on regional and international hotspot issues, so as to be future-oriented strategic partners featuring mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual learning, mutually beneficial cooperation, win-win results, coordination and common progress. .

Boris Johnson noted that the UK is firmly committed to developing strategic partnership with China and jointly building the "Golden Era" of bilateral relations. The UK is willing to, together with the Chinese side, strengthen strategic communication, advance bilateral cooperation in various areas including economy and trade, investment, aviation and infrastructure construction, jointly cope with major challenges confronting the international society and step up coordination in global hotspot issues.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Both sides issued a joint declaration on the Afghan issue after the dialogue.
