On the afternoon of May 16, 2017, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Great Hall of the People with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, who was in China for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

Li Keqiang expressed that China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors linked by mountains and rivers. China always upholds friendly policy toward Myanmar, and is willing to, together with the country, align development strategies, intensify high-level exchanges, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, so as to better benefit the two peoples. It is hoped that both countries could steadily advance cooperation on major projects including special economic zone, oil and gas pipeline, and ports, and properly handle the issue of Myitsone Hydropower Station to guide cooperation expectation and boost enterprises’ confidence.

Li Keqiang pointed out that China expects an early cease-fire in northern Myanmar to ensure peace and stability in China-Myanmar border area. The Chinese side supports Myanmar in well hosting the second 21st Century Panlong Conference, and is ready to continue to play a constructive role in advancing Myanmar’s domestic peace process.

Aung San Suu Kyi expressed that Myanmar and China enjoy a long-standing friendship. Attaching great importance to developing its relations with China, Myanmar regards China as a good friend, and is full of expectation for the prospects of bilateral cooperation. The country is ready to further enhance economic and trade cooperation as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges with China. Appreciating China’s support and assistance to domestic peace process in the country, the Myanmar side welcomes China to continue to make efforts to this end.

After the meeting, Li Keqiang and Aung San Suu Kyi jointly witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents covering the integration of development strategies, economy, technology, health, and cultural relic protection.
