President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan Meets with Wang Yi

2017-06-24 17:04

On June 24, 2017 local time, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan met in Kabul with visiting Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said that the Afghan people have always regarded China as a good neighbor and a good partner in safeguarding peace, security and prosperity. Located on an important juncture along the routes of the "Belt and Road" as well as on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Afghanistan wishes to strengthen cooperation with China in economy, trade, investment, electricity, transportation and other areas. Afghanistan will continue to crack down on terrorist forces-the East Turkistan Islamic Movement to ensure common security of both countries. The Afghan government has always been determined to achieve domestic reconciliation through peace negotiations and has never wavered even during the most difficult times. Living together in peace with neighboring countries is an important goal of Afghanistan's diplomacy. The country is willing to improve relations with Pakistan, and both sides should first build mutual trust.

Wang Yi said that China does not interfere in internal affairs of other countries, not impose its will to others and has no intention in fighting geographical interests. But when friends need help, China is ready to lend a helping hand. China firmly supports Afghanistan's processes in national reconciliation and economic reconstruction, and hopes Afghanistan to play a greater role in enhancing regional economic integration as well as connectivity. China is willing to expand practical cooperation with Afghanistan under the "Belt and Road" framework.

Wang Yi stated that Afghanistan and Pakistan are neighboring countries with close historical and cultural connections. The Chinese side sincerely hopes that the two countries can improve bilateral relations, rebuild mutual trust, and strengthen cooperation so as to achieve common security and development. As a common friend for both Afghanistan and Pakistan, China encourages the two nations to establish crisis prevention and control mechanisms in a timely manner and properly deal with various kinds of emergencies. China supports the setting up of a trilateral meeting mechanism among Foreign Ministers of China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, to strengthen dialogue and cooperation in all fields.

Wang Yi expressed that China has been always in support of the "Afghan-owned and Afghan-led" reconciliation process, and any effort in this regard should respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Afghanistan. China appreciates Mr. President for overcoming difficulties and the efforts made for this process. China welcomes the Afghan government to launch the Kabul process, supports the revival of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group of Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the US, and supports the activation of the work of the liaison group between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Afghanistan. China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace talks.
