On August 7, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on the sideline of the series of Foreign Ministers' meetings on East Asia cooperation in Manila, the Philippines. Both sides mainly exchanged in-depth views on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
Wang Yi introduced China's views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and stressed that UN Security Council resolution concerning the Democratic People's Republic of Korea should be fully and faithfully implemented. The "suspension-for-suspension" proposal put forward by China can not only settle the most pressing security concerns of all parties, but also is conducive to breaking the vicious circle of the current situation and finding a breakthrough to restore peace talks. It is hoped that parties concerned should take their due responsibilities.
Federica Mogherini noted that the EU appreciates China for its important role in properly solving the Iranian nuclear issue and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. The EU and China once carried out sound cooperation in solving the Iranian nuclear issue. Both sides hope to learn from experience in negotiation on the Iranian nuclear issue, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation so as to seek out a creative peaceful resolution on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
