Xi Jinping Meets with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guter

2019-04-26 10:12

On April 26, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the world today is undergoing unprecedented changes unseen in the past century. We must see the essence clearly from each kind of chaos, and grasp the rule from the historical dimension. The trend of economic globalization is irreversible, and win-win cooperation is the right path for the world. China firmly upholds multilateralism, the international system with the UN at its core, and the international order based on international law, and promotes the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. The more complex and grim the situation is, the more important it is to manifest the authority and role of the UN. China will continue to support the UN.

Xi Jinping stressed that China has a clear conscience and aboveboard actions in the international community. The Chinese people not only pursue a good life for themselves, but also work for common interest and harmony of the world. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) put forward by me embodies the idea of harmonious coexistence, mutual benefit and win-win results, and is also in line with the UN's sustainable development concept. As a Chinese poetry goes, "Thick mountains could not stop the river from flowing into the sea." China's development is a historical necessity, and win-win cooperation is the common aspiration of all countries. The UN is an important partner in jointly building the BRI. The Chinese side is ready to work with the UN to uphold the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits to advance the joint construction of the BRI in an all-round way.

António Guterres warmly congratulated on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. President Xi Jinping's speech at the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation this morning was very important. It profoundly illustrated the close connection between the BRI and the global development agenda. I also speak highly of the major measures put forward by President Xi Jinping to further China's reform and opening up. The world today is full of uncertainties and the global rule of law and multilateralism are being challenged. China has played an important stabilizing role in upholding multilateralism, equity and justice, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, thus giving certainty, confidence and hope to the world. The BRI is in line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Countries around the world should seize the opportunities brought about by the BRI cooperation to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. History will prove that China's development is not only an irresistible historical trend, but also a major contribution to human progress.

Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi and He Lifeng attended the meeting.
