Xi Jinping Meets with President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka

On May 14, 2019, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka who was in China for the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations (CDAC).

Xi Jinping pointed out that the Chinese side strongly condemns the recent terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, and is ready to resolutely stand alongside the Sri Lankan government and people, support the Sri Lankan side in combating terrorism, and help the Sri Lankan side enhance its counter-terrorism capacity building to safeguard national security and stability.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Sri Lanka are good neighbors and good partners. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Sri Lankan side to constantly push forward the strategic cooperative partnership featuring sincere mutual help and long-term friendship. Both sides should maintain regular high-level communication, firmly grasp the general direction of friendly cooperation, and staunchly support each other. The two countries should steadily advance the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, promote cooperation in major projects, and accelerate livelihood projects to benefit the people of Sri Lanka. Both sides should also deepen security law enforcement cooperation and jointly address non-traditional security threats including terrorism. It is believed that the Sri Lankan side will make good use of the CDAC as a platform to showcase its time-honored Buddhist civilization and colorful and diversified cultures.

Maithripala Sirisena said that I expressed profound condolence over the death of Chinese citizens in the recent terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka and thanked the Chinese side for firmly supporting the Sri Lankan side in combating terrorism. The CDAC proposed by China carries great significance for the region and the world, and it is also important for Sri Lanka. The two countries enjoy a time-honored friendship. Thanking the Chinese side for its long-term support, Maithripala Sirisena said the Sri Lankan side always regards developing relations with China as a priority, and is willing to work with the Chinese side to enhance Belt and Road cooperation, and deepen development and security cooperation.

After the meeting, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of relevant bilateral cooperation documents.

Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Huang Kunming, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
