Wang Yi Meets with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of India

On May 22, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of India on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Bishkek.

Wang Yi noted that the Chinese side congratulated India on its successful conclusion of the general election. The Chinese side hopes that the Indian side will set up a new government on schedule, and that both sides can achieve a smooth transition and greater development in bilateral relations. Both sides should implement well the important consensus reached by leaders of both countries, prepare well for bilateral high-level exchanges in the next stage, initiate bilateral dialogue mechanisms as soon as possible, maintain peace and stability in the border areas, and together celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of China-India diplomatic relations in 2020. Wang Yi said that as a common neighbor of India and Pakistan, the Chinese side sincerely hopes that India and Pakistan can seize opportunities to improve their relations and promote peace and stability in the region.

Sushma Swaraj expressed that the new government of India will continue to make the development of India-China relations a diplomacy priority, and will further boost bilateral cooperation in all fields. The Indian side stands ready to work with the Chinese side to implement well the key consensus reached by leaders of both countries, strengthen communication and coordination, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas, so as to promote India-China relations for constant and forward-looking development. India is willing to improve bilateral relations with Pakistan, and hopes that the two sides can make joint efforts to this end.
