Wang Yi Meets with SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming

2022-03-17 20:55

On March 17, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Zhang Ming in Beijing.

Having congratulated Zhang Ming on taking up his new post, Wang Yi noted that the SCO, since its inception, has made remarkable achievements in its development and accumulated valuable cooperation experience, playing an important and unique role in maintaining regional peace and stability and promoting the development and revitalization of member states. Recalling the joint celebration of the 20th anniversary of the organization last year, Wang pointed out that by launching a new round of membership expansion and drawing up a new blueprint for development, the SCO has taken solid steps forward in building a closer SCO community with a shared future.

Wang said that as the world has entered a period of turbulence and transformation, human society is facing a complex and severe security and development environment. In the face of the fallouts of the Ukraine crisis, the SCO, the largest international organization by combined landmass and population, should play a more active role in maintaining security and stability in the region and beyond. First, it needs to vigorously carry forward the "Shanghai Spirit", deepen solidarity and coordination among member states, and strengthen mutual support. Second, it needs to actively act on the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and maintain regional stability and security. Third, it must resolutely oppose the return of the Cold War mentality and the creation of bloc confrontations. The pursuit of exclusive or absolute security will go nowhere but bring endless harm. Fourth, it must resolutely oppose illegal unilateral sanctions, respect the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and defend international fairness and justice.

Wang Yi noted that as the host country, China will continue to support the work of the Secretary-General and the Secretariat. China expects the Secretariat to demonstrate new morale, attempt new things and make new achievements in organizing major events, maintaining solidarity and coordination, and progressing cooperation in key areas, so as to constantly enhance the cohesiveness, execution capability and influence of the SCO.

Zhang Ming said that he will lead the Secretariat to actively perform duties, carry out work in a down-to-earth manner, coordinate and promote cooperation in various fields, and make due contributions to the development of the organization. He noted that the SCO has been following the situation in Ukraine closely, and hopes to see peace restored and security for all ensured at an early date, and the world enjoy enduring peace and stability.
