The 9th China-Japan High-level Political Dialogue is Held in Tianjin

2022-08-18 10:00

On August 17, 2022, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi co-chaired the 9th China-Japan High-level Political Dialogue in Tianjin with Secretary-General of Japan's National Security Secretariat Akiba Takeo.

Yang Jiechi said that the history of more than 2,000 years of exchanges between China and Japan and the development of relations over the past 50 years since the normalization of diplomatic ties have shown that peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation are the only right choice for bilateral relations. It is vital that the two sides take the important common understanding reached between leaders of the two countries as the political guidance and guidelines of action, uphold a strong sense of responsibility and mission, take serious lessons from history, stay well focused and clear minded, eliminate internal and external disturbances, and work together to build a China-Japan relationship that answers the needs of the new era.

Yang Jiechi stressed that given the complex international situation, the regional and global significance of China-Japan relations has become more prominent. The Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping are fundamental answers to the common aspirations of all countries for peace and development. China is a key engine of development for the region and the world at large. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Taiwan question bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations and the basic trust between the two sides. Japan should bear in mind the fundamental and long-term interests of the two countries and two peoples, shape the right perception of China, pursue a positive, practical and rational policy toward China, and stick to the right direction of peace and development. It should abide by the four political documents and political consensus between the two countries, discard the zero-sum mentality, and work jointly with China to enhance political mutual trust, properly manage differences, and build a bilateral relationship that is more mature, stable, healthy and resilient.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern. The two sides agreed that the dialogue is candid, in-depth and constructive, with some useful consensus reached, and that the two sides will continue to maintain dialogue and communication.

The China-Japan High-level Political Dialogue, an important institutional arrangement to strengthen high-level strategic communication between the two countries, was first held in 2015. The dates of the dialogue are agreed upon by both sides in advance. The eighth dialogue was held in Tokyo on February 28, 2020.
