Wang Yi Meets with Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho

On September 21, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi said that the Chinese people have a friendship with the Portuguese people. China-Portugal relations have undergone the test of changing international landscape, and achieved sound development on the basis of mutual understanding and mutual trust. Bilateral practical cooperation has been advanced despite the pandemic, the export of Portuguese agri-food products to China has increased rapidly, and cooperation between large companies of the two sides and tripartite cooperation have been progressing smoothly. China and Portugal are both committed to practicing true multilateralism. In face of the volatile and changing world, the Chinese side stands ready to work with the Portuguese side to jointly uphold the core role of the United Nations in international affairs, and jointly promote peace, development and progress of mankind.

Wang Yi said that Portugal is an important member of the European Union (EU), and plays a positive and constructive role in the China-EU exchanges. The Chinese side looks forward to mutual understanding, mutual appreciation, peaceful coexistence, mutual learning, and respect for each other's choice of development path in light of its own historical and cultural heritage with Portugal and other European countries, and hopes that the EU upholds an objective, reasonable and just manner, and focus on the mainstream of the China-EU cooperation, to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.

Cravinho said that the Portugal-China friendly exchanges have continued for centuries, practical cooperation between the two countries in various fields has developed rapidly, and Portuguese enterprises have shown stronger interest in investing in China. China is of crucial importance for safeguarding peace and security, and responding to climate change and other common challenges. The Portuguese side appreciates the Chinese side for playing a positive role in international affairs, and stands ready to maintain high-level exchanges with the Chinese side and advance strategic dialogue. Portugal agrees on the diversity of civilizations, and stands for open and candid dialogues, to increase mutual understanding and create a favorable environment for bilateral cooperation between Portugal and China, and multilateral cooperation between the EU and China.

The two sides spoke highly of the efforts of both countries to achieve the successful return of Macao to China through friendly negotiations, creating new highlights in cooperation, and said that the two countries will jointly increase support for the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Cravinho spoke highly of "One Country, Two Systems" for being effective in Macao, and expects that Macao will continue to serve as a bridge to promote Portugal-China cooperation.

Both sides also had an exchange of views on the Ukraine issue, and Wang Yi briefed on China's basic position of promoting peace talks, and the constructive role it plays.
