Ambassador Zhang Jun Expounded China's Position on the Situation in East Jerusalem at the Security Council

2021-05-10 22:57

On 10 May, the UN Security Council held emergency consultations on the situation in East Jerusalem. Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the UN, chaired the meeting as President of the Council for the month of May, and expounded China's position when speaking in his national capacity.

Ambassador Zhang said, China is deeply concerned about the escalating tensions and violence in East Jerusalem. The serious clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in the past days are disturbing. China condemns the violence against civilians, calls on all sides to exercise restraint and refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, and encourages immediate actions towards de-escalation. Israeli authorities should take necessary measures to prevent violence, threats and provocations against Muslim worshipers. The historic status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City should always be upheld and respected.

Ambassador Zhang said, China is deeply concerned about the looming eviction of Palestine families in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods in East Jerusalem. China urges Israel to cease demolitions, evictions and all settlement activities, in line with its obligations under relevant UN resolution and international law.

Ambassador Zhang pointed out, given the volatile situation and potential of escalation, the Security Council should reiterate its commitment and unwavering support to the two-State solution and call for deescalation in the interest of peace and stability.
