Latest Developments of Wenchuan Earthquake Relief

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of 12:00 noon May 23 (Friday),

  • The confirmed death toll of Wenchuan earthquake had risen to 55,740, with 292,481 injured, 24,960 missing and 11,367,929 relocated.
  • The total domestic and foreign donations in cash and in kind had reached 24.644 billion yuan (US$3.53 billion), with 16.024 billion yuan (US$2.30 billion) of cash in place and 3.004 billion yuan (US$430 million) forwarded to the earthquake zone.
  • Some 443,340 tents, 18,334 makeshift houses, 2.319 million quilts, 3.075 million items of clothing, 315,000 tons of oil and 679,000 tons of coal had been transported to the area.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of 12:00 noon May 23 (Friday), a total of 73,939 people injured in the earthquake had been hospitalized, of which 38,683 had been treated and discharged, 3,451 died, 28,377 remained in hospitals, and 3,428 transferred to hospitals in places other than Sichuan. A total of 86,517 medical personnel had been involved in disaster relief.

According to China's State Seismological Bureau, as of 12:00 noon May 23 (Friday), 175 aftershocks measuring above 4 on Richter's scale had been monitored, of which 27 were measured over 5 in magnitude, and 4 were measured 6 or higher.

According to the Ministry of Finance, as of 2:00 pm May 23 (Friday), a total of 14.629 billion yuan of disaster relief funds had been invested by governments at various levels, of which 10.826 billion yuan were from central budget and 3.803 billion yuan from local budget.

 

According to the report of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of 10:00 am May 22 (Thursday), the death toll of Wenchuan earthquake had risen to 51,151, with 288,431 injured, and 29,328 missing. By 12:00 noon May 22, the total domestic and foreign donations in cash and in kind had reached 21.416 billion yuan (US$3.07 billion), with 12.579 billion yuan of cash in place and 1.915 billion yuan forwarded to the earthquake zone. Some 403,340 tents, 2.306 million quilts, and 3.05 million items of clothing had been transported to the area. In addition, 384,000 tons of the first batch of central reserve grains, including 152,400 tons of wheat and 231,600 tons of rice, were also being transported to the area.

According to the report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as of 12:00 noon May 21 (Wednesday), the number of tents donated by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, UK, US and the UN Refuge Agency had exceeded 150,000.

According to the report of the Ministry of Health, as of 12:00 noon May 22 (Thursday), a total of 68,608 people injured in the earthquake had been hospitalized, of which 28,497 had been treated and discharged, 3,444 died, 33,665 remained in hospitals, and 3,002 transferred to hospitals in places other than Sichuan.
