Latest Developments of Wenchuan Earthquake Relief

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of midday Tuesday, May 27th,

  • The confirmed death toll of Wenchuan earthquake had risen to 67,183, with 361,822 injured and 20,790 missing. 45,612,765 people were affected by the 8.0-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks, and 15,006,341 had been relocated.
  • As of 7:00 p.m. on Monday, the quake had left 66,674 dead and 350,133 injured in Sichuan Province alone. A total of 83,988 people had been rescued and more than 6.7 million had been relocated. A total of 64,719 bodies had been buried in the province.
  • Donations from home and abroad to China's quake-hit areas had reached 32.722 billion yuan (4.67 billion U.S. dollars), with 24.734 billion yuan (US$3.53 billion) of cash in place and 9.371 billion yuan (US$1.34 billion) in cash and relief materials forwarded to the earthquake-affected areas.
  • As of Tuesday noon, some 566,400 tents, 3.5055 million quilts, 8.3397 million items of clothing as well as 450,000 tonnes of fuel oil and 940,000 tonnes of coal had been transported and delivered to the quake-affected areas.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction, as of Monday, 1,600 temporary homes had been set up in the quake zone and 4,000 were being set up, with 7,200 awaiting installation, 14,400 being transported and 26,000 to be transported from localities of their manufacturers.

According to the Operations Department of PLA General Staff Headquarters, as of Monday (May 26) midnight, disaster relief workers had managed to rescue and relocate 698,302 people to safe areas, and to dig 6,541 survivors from ruined buildings.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of 12:00 noon May 27 (Tuesday), hospitals had treated a total of 84,810 people injured in the earthquake, of whom 54,374 had been treated and discharged, while 16,288 remained hopitalized as inpatients. 6,363 had been transferred from Sichuan to other parts of China for further treatment.

According to China Seismological Bureau,

  • As of 12:00 noon May 27 (Tuesday), 182 aftershocks measuring at or above 4.0 on Richter scale had been monitored, of which 28 were measured at or above 5 in magnitude, and 5 were measured 6.0 or higher.
  • No aftershocks measuring at or above 4.0 on the Richter scale have been monitored from Monday noon to midday Tuesday, while 226 feeble shocks below magnitude 3.9 were detected in the area.
  • However two fresh aftershocks struck earthquake zone in southwest China on Tuesday afternoon. A 5.4-magnitude aftershock hit Qingchuan County in Sichuan Province at about 4:03 p.m. and another 5.7-magnitude aftershock hit neighboring Ningqiang County in Shaanxi Province.

According to the Ministry of Finance, as of 2:00 p.m. May 27 (Tuesday), the government disaster relief fund for quake-stricken areas had hit 19.216 billion yuan, up 2.59 billion yuan from the previous day. The fund included 15.126 billion yuan from the central budget and 4.09 billion yuan from the local budget.

According to State Electricity Regulatory Commission, as of 12:00 noon, May 27th, electricity power had been restored in Jiangyou and Pengzhou counties while Beichuan Township still had no electricity.

According to the Ministry of Transport, by Tuesday, 29,523 kilometers of the 32,939 kilometers of damaged roads (in quake-affected Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Henan, Hubei and Yunnan provinces and Chongqing municipality) had been repaired and re-opened to traffic.


  According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of 12:00 noon May 26 (Monday),

  • The confirmed death toll of Wenchuan earthquake had risen to 65,080, with 360,058 injured, 23,150 missing and 14,382,414 relocated. The accumulative total of quake-affected population is 45,509,241. Monday afternoon's 6.4-magnitude aftershock in Qingchuan County caused in Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and Chongqing 8 deaths, and 927 cases of injuries.
  • The total domestic and foreign donations in cash and in kind had reached 30.876 billion yuan (US$4.44 billion), with 23.020 billion yuan (US$3.3 billion) of cash in place and 9.054 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion) forwarded to the earthquake zone.
  • Some 495,997 tents, 3.096617 million quilts, 5.214626 million items of clothing; 410,000 tons of oil and 880,000 tons of coal had been transported to the area.

  According to the Operations Department of PLA General Staff Headquarters, as of Sunday (May 25) midnight, rescuers had managed to rescue and transfer 666,331 people, including 6,537 excavated from ruined buildings.

  According to the Ministry of Health, as of 12:00 noon May 26 (Monday), a total of 83,527 people injured in the earthquake had been hospitalized, of which 53,247 had been treated and discharged, and 17,168 remained inpatients. 5,914 had been transferred to hospitals in places other than Sichuan.

  According to China's State Seismological Bureau, as of 12:00 noon May 26 (Monday), 182 aftershocks measuring above 4 on Richter's scale had been monitored, of which 28 were measured over 5 in magnitude, and 5 were measured 6 or higher.

  According to the Ministry of Finance, as of 2:00 pm May 26 (Monday), a total of 16.626 billion yuan had been invested in earthquake relief by governments at various levels; The government disaster relief fund for quake-hit areas included 12.562 billion yuan from central budget and 4.064 billion yuan from local budgets.

  According to China Banking Regulatory Commission, as of Monday morning, May 26th, 97.3% of banking service offices in the quake-hit areas have resumed operation, with 348 offices' operation still suspended. Banking and financial institutions had provided loans totaling 9.494 billion yuan for quake relief and post-disaster reconstruction in Sichuan Province; over 550 million yuan worth of loans have been provided to Gansu Province, Shaanxi Province and Chongqing Municipality.

  According to State Electricity Regulatory Commission, as of 12:00 noon, May 26th, electricity power supply had been restored in Hongyuan County but not in Beichuan County.
